AI Journaling
A guide to AI journaling with Jorna, how it works, and how to get the most out of it.
The Intersection
AI journaling is a relatively new concept that combines the traditional practice of recording your thoughts, feelings and experiences with the capabilities of artificial intelligence. This raises an important question: what does AI actually add to journaling, and can it genuinely help us understand and improve our lives?
To answer this, it helps to first understand what makes traditional journaling valuable. Journaling can broadly refer to recording experiences, events, behaviours or thoughts. When used for personal reflection or habit tracking, however, its value goes beyond simply keeping a record. Writing about our experiences encourages metacognition, the ability to step back and think about our own thoughts, behaviours and emotions. This distance can give us a different perspective on our lives and help us recognise things that may be difficult to notice in the moment.
The limitation is that much of this reflection happens only when we deliberately make time for it. A traditional journal may contain months or years of valuable experiences, yet learning from them requires us to manually revisit, interpret and connect those entries ourselves. Patterns can therefore remain hidden across hundreds of individual moments.
This is where technology, and particularly AI, can extend the traditional journaling process. Rather than replacing the act of reflection, AI can help organise and interpret the information we have already recorded. By connecting experiences across time, recurring themes, behaviours and patterns can become easier to recognise.
The idea behind AI journaling is therefore relatively simple: your journal becomes more than a record of your past. It becomes a tool for understanding it.
How Jorna Uses AI
Jorna uses AI to help you make sense of the information you choose to share with it. If you allow Jorna to use your entries for personalised features, our AI and language model partners can securely process those entries to identify useful context and patterns. Your entries remain protected and encrypted, and they are not made publicly accessible.
Jorna uses Natural Language Understanding to organise information from your entries into relevant categories and understand things such as themes, sentiment, emotions, habits and activities. As you add more entries, Jorna can build a richer picture of the context surrounding your experiences, helping you recognise patterns that may otherwise be difficult to notice.
Importantly, Jorna is not designed to replace journaling, thinking or reflection. We believe the act of thinking deeply about your experiences is one of the most valuable parts of journaling and of the human experience itself. Jorna does not aim to outsource that thinking to AI. Instead, we want to help you go deeper, ask better questions and think more introspectively about your own life.
Jorna's role is to organise your thoughts and information so they are easier to access, revisit and understand. You remain the person interpreting your experiences and deciding what they mean.
Context is often lost in everyday life. A journal entry, habit or health metric viewed on its own can tell you what happened, but it may not explain the circumstances surrounding it. Jorna brings this information together to help you explore the why behind your patterns, while leaving the most important part, reflection, to you.
